Abstract

Tafsir al-Ibrīz is one of the works of interpretation of the Qur'an written by KH. Bisri Mustofa using the Javanese language with Arabic script. This study examines the interpretation in Tafsir al-Ibrīz using Manna Khalil al-Qattan's theoretical framework on tafsir bi al-maʾthūr and tafsir bi al-raʾyī. The research method used is a literature study by analyzing relevant academic literature and comparing it with al-Qattan's theory of interpretation. The results show that Tafsir al-Ibrīz uses a combination of tafsir bi al-maʾthūr and bi al-raʾyī with a stronger tendency towards contextual raʾyī that remains related to the principles of the salaf. KH. Bisri Mustofa applied the tahlili method with an ijmali style, quoting accounts from the Qur'an, hadith, and the words of the companions without complete sanad, but also performing contextual ijtihad to bring understanding closer to the Javanese people. In terms of style, this tafsir harmoniously combines fiqhi, Sufi, and socio-community aspects. Analysis using al-Qattan's perspective proves that although it appears to use maʾthūr on the surface, the substance of its interpretation is more dominant towards raʾyī, which is in accordance with the spirit of sharia and is based on an understanding of language and socio-cultural context. The raʾyī used by Bisri Mustofa is not reprehensible ra'yu in al-Qattan's sense, because it remains within the corridor permitted by sharia and does not deviate from the tradition of the salaf scholars. This interpretation serves as a model of contextual interpretation that successfully combines textual authority with the local realities of the archipelago's communities.
